Reported speech | Непряма мова

Ми постійно передаємо чужі слова — це одна з найчастіших операцій у реальній комунікації.

Але сказати: He said: “I am busy.” — звучить занадто «ненатурально».
У реальному житті люди говорять так: He said he was busy.

І це — reported speech, або непряма мова.
Якщо ви хочете звучати природно, професійно та впевнено — ця тема обов’язкова.

Що таке reported speech?

Reported speech (непряма мова) — це спосіб передати, що хтось сказав, без дослівних цитат.

Пряма мова:

“I’m tired,” she said.

Непряма мова:

She said she was tired.

Ми не використовуємо лапки, змінюємо граматику і часто — часи.

Де ви зустрінете reported speech?

На роботі

• He said the deadline was moved.
• She told me I needed to sign the contract.

У новинах

• The president stated that the situation was under control.

У фільмах

• He said he didn’t know.
• They told her she couldn’t stay.

У подорожах

• The receptionist explained that breakfast started at 7.

У повсякденному житті

• She said she couldn’t meet today.
• He told me he would call later.

Якщо ви спілкуєтеся з людьми — ви вже використовуєте reported speech, навіть якщо не замислюєтеся про це.

Основні правила переходу до непрямої мови

1. Заміна займенників

Ми змінюємо я → він/вона, мій → його/її, якщо потрібно.

Direct: “I love this place,” she said.
Reported: She said she loved that place.

2. Зміна часу (backshift — зсув назад)

Якщо reporting verb у минулому часі (said, told, explained),
час висловлювання зазвичай зсувається назад на один крок.

Приклади:

• “I am tired.” → She said she was tired.

• “I’ve finished.” → He said he had finished.
• “I will call you.” → She said she would call me.

Заміна вказівників часу й місця

tomorrow →	the next day / the following day
yesterday →	the day before
now →	then
here →	there
this →	that
these →	those

Приклад:

“I’ll see you tomorrow.” → He said he would see me the next day.

Reporting verbs: say vs tell

say — сказати взагалі

• She said she was tired.

tell somebody — сказати комусь

• She told me she was tired.

Поширена помилка:
She said me…-wrong
She told me…
She said… (без об’єкта)

Питання в непрямій мові

1. Питання без питального слова (yes/no)

Використовуємо if / whether

“Do you like it?”
→ He asked if I liked it.

2. Питання з питальним словом

Залишається порядок слів як у звичайному реченні, без інверсії.

“Where are you going?”
→ She asked where I was going.

(а не where was I going)

Накази та прохання (imperatives)

Формула:
tell/ask + someone + to + verb

“Close the door!”
→ He told me to close the door.

“Please help me.”
→ She asked me to help her.

Найпоширеніші помилки

She said me…-wrong

She told me…/ She said…

Інверсія в непрямих питаннях

WRONG: She asked where was I going.
RIGHT: She asked where I was going.

Не змінюють час, коли потрібно

“I am fine.” → She said she was fine.

Неправильно замінюють слова часу

WRONG: tomorrow → tomorrow
RIGHT: tomorrow → the next day

Плутають say і tell

WRONG: He said me the truth.
RIGHT: He told me the truth.

Коли НЕ потрібно змінювати час?

Якщо reporting verb у теперішньому часі:

She says she is tired.

Якщо інформація досі актуальна

“My name is John.”
→ He said his name is John.

У наукових фактах

“The Earth moves around the Sun.”
→ He said the Earth moves around the Sun.
